BrandExtract Sponsors 15th Annual Rice Business Plan Competition

April 27, 2015

The Rice Business Plan Competition (RBPC) is the world’s richest and largest student start-up competition, featuring over a million dollars in prizes, hundreds of judges and 42 global teams. BrandExtract has been involved with the competition for 11 years, creating the theme marketing materials for the event each year and, perhaps most importantly, working with the winning teams to create a brand for their new company.

“The Rice Business Plan Competition provides real companies with real opportunities,” says BrandExtract President and CEO, Bo Bothe, who has also served as a judge of RBPC for over a decade. “As the biggest and best competition of its kind, this experience provides unrivaled mentorship opportunities and business connections for young entrepreneurs. The fundamental goal of the competition is to help the next generation of entrepreneurs get their ideas to market.”

The 15th annual competition took place this April 16-18, with BrandExtract once again serving as the Branding Design and Marketing Prize Sponsor. Since the firm began offering branding services as part of the Grand Prize package, it has created identities for five winning start-up companies.

“The branding package that we develop with the winners is just as valuable as the money or any other prize awarded throughout the competition,” explains Greg Giles, Associate Creative Director at BrandExtract. “These entrepreneurs have created a potentially game-changing idea, product or service, and now they need an equally potent voice with which to speak to the outside world.”

Past RBPC winners that have utilized BrandExtract’s services include start-ups such as ATDynamics, FlyVax, and ResuRx Pharmaceuticals. The firm is currently working with the 2014 Winner, Medical Adhesive Revolution (MAR), on a naming and branding project.

MAR President Alexander Schueller explains that, "in addition to the investment prizes, we are benefiting from great in-kind prizes...BrandExtract has been working with us on our brand identity, which we have been meaning to change for some time now. While we had representative aspects to the business in place before, the RBPC prizes help us to make them truely professional."

The firm also designs the event collateral each year. For 2015, BrandExtract created a hero theme featuring embodiments of all the competitors in the forms of super businesspeople: The Amazing Disruptor and The Fantastic Pivot. The illustrations appear across program covers, judges’ books and other promotional materials.

Congratulations to all the teams who competed in 2015. BrandExtract looks forward to working with this year’s Grand Prize winners, KiLife Tech.
